Free Tax Preparation Services through Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)

Tax season is approaching, and we’re here to offer assistance in collaboration with Will County Center for Community Concerns. Joliet Township is proud to introduce the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, dedicated to providing free basic tax return preparation to qualified individuals. 

If your income is less than $60,000, you may qualify, and this cost-free service extends to seniors, regardless of their income level. It’s our commitment to making tax support accessible and straightforward to those in need. 

VITA meticulously examines available credits to ensure that individuals receive the full benefits they are entitled to. All returns are filed electronically, ensuring a faster refund for those in need.

The program is available Mid-January through April. Follow the steps below to take advantage of this program. 

  1. Collect Necessary Documents: (See Document Checklist below)
  2. Complete Tax Preparation Packet:
    • Obtain at Joliet Township Government Office (175 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, IL 60432).
    • Submit all relevant tax forms along with the completed packet.
  3. Wait for Tax Preparation:
    • Once your documents are submitted, wait for our team to prepare your taxes.
  4. Review and Sign:
    • Receive a call when your tax preparation is ready.
    • Come in to review and sign the prepared documents.
  5. Refund Process: If eligible for a refund, choose the convenience of direct deposit.
  6. Owe Taxes? Act before Tax Day (April 15):
    • If you owe taxes, you will receive forms.
    • Submit the forms before Tax Day to avoid added interest.

  3. W-2 from 2023 Employers
  4. Mortgage Interest Statement 1098
  5. 2022 Tax Return
  6. Health Insurance Form 1095-A
  7. Student Loans Form 1098-E
  8. Unemployment Benefits Form 1099-G
  9. Gambling Winnings Form W-2
  10. Receipts from Charitable Donations
